Fitness Standards
Review the required fitness standards via the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy standards
- These standards must be meet during initial testing and upon entry into the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Detention Officer Basic course.

Testing Information
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office tests for new Detention Deputies at least once each year. All applicants will be notified of a future testing dates via the contact information collected on the application form.
Testing Procedure
- A physical exam will be given following the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy standards. These standards can be reviewed here - Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Standards
- Upon successful completion of the physical exam, a written exam will be administered.
- Right after the written exam has been completed applications will be interviewed by an oral board.
Post Testing Information
If a candidate passes the phyisical, written and oral examinations we require the following documents be submitted back to the Albany County Sheriff's Office.
- Personal History Statement
- Authorization for Release of Information
- Copies of the following documents
- High School Diploma or GED
- Drivers License
- Social Security Card
- Birth Certificate
- College Transcripts
- DD214
- POST test if availably (not required)
Eligibility List
Successful Applicants are ranked on an eligibility list based upon the testing process. The eligibility list is then held by the Albany County Sheriff for a period of one year, or until the eligibility list is exhausted.
All detention deputy vacancies are filled from applicants on the eligibility is following a final personal interview with the sheriff.
**Note: Patrol Deputy Position openings are filled through an application and test process open to current sworn in personnel in the Detention Center.
Employment Conditions
Once a candidate is chosen, an offer of employment is given to the candidate contingent upon successful completing the following requirements:
- Satisfactory physical health and conditioning is required. The physical examination will be conducted by a physician of the Sheriff’s Office choosing and will include a drug screening. Eye sight must be correctable to 20/20.
- Successful completion of an oral and written psychological examination.
- Successful completion of an extensive background investigation.
Initial Training
Upon successfully completing the hiring examination process, a new Albany County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy will receive approximately 5 to 6 months of training (new Deputies with previous experience and POST certification may have a reduced training regimen).
The training includes:
- Attending the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas, WY to complete the 8 week Detention Officers Basic Course.
- Completing a minimum of 13 weeks in the field Training Officer Program. This program requires new deputies to conduct regular Detention Deputy Duties under the direct supervision and guidance of the Field Training Officers, conducted over all shifts.
- Successful completion of a probationary period of 1 year.
